Haute Lumiere Prize...what you could win!

So, here is the carrot to hang before your nose that will have you reaching for your sketch book and cause your design brain to whir into a flurry of activity...

The winner of the Haute Lumiere Lighting competition gets to attend the 5-day 'Lights in Alingsås' lighting workshop in Sweden. It is an incredible opportunity to learn about light, both from the lighting designers heading up the workshop and the 60 or so other people attending the workshop. During the workshop various light installations are created around the town and then enjoyed by the public on the last evening as the whole town is invited to walk around the town and experience the work created during the week.

Have a look at http://www.lightsinalingsas.com/  for more information on the workshop.

This opportunity will change your perception of light forever and, in my mind at least, is a HUGE carrot!
So get your sketch books out and start designing!

Coming up on the blog will be an interview with a previous winner of the competition and her experiences of 'Lights in Alingsås' - keep a look out for this!

"How to design a light..."

If you have entered the competition and now you are wondering just how to design that light that you are going to enter into the competition...then get a copy of this fantastic book, "How to Design a Light" by the Design Museum.
I had a quick read through the book this week end, and it really does highlight what is important to consider in designing a light and also gives loads of insight into the little-understood profession of lighting design. It includes an in-depth interview with Arnold Chan - the guy responsible for lighting the buildings of David Chipperfield, Johan Pawson, Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers, Philippe Starck & Jean Nouvel!
Definately worth a read!

"Light is profoundly celebratory. From the candles on a birthday cake to the fireworks display, the decorative traditions of Christmas, Hanukkah & Divali, light plays a central role in festivities around the world. On such occasions, it is the ability of light to create a spectacle that stirs emotion & taps into the collective unconscious."   - How to Design a Light, pg 32
